Over 50 Artworks by Visual Art Students Installed to Support Cancer Patients at Sault Area Hospital

Algoma University’s Visual Arts program and the Sault Area Hospital have partnered once again to bring healing-focused artwork into the Algoma District Cancer Program. This collaboration is rooted in growing research showing that art in healthcare settings can reduce stress, promote calm, and support overall patient wellbeing. By integrating thoughtfully selected artwork into treatment spaces, the project aims to create a more welcoming and comforting environment for patients, families, visitors, and staff.

The initiative was guided by the fall course Special Topics in Public Art: Art and Cancer Care, led by Algoma University Visual Arts Professor Katie Huckson. Students were invited to create and curate artworks specifically designed for cancer care environments, drawing on studies that highlight the therapeutic impact of colour, subject matter, and visual design. What began as a small class project quickly expanded into a community-wide effort. Visual Arts alumni, current and former professors, and local artists contributed their work, resulting in a diverse collection of more than fifty artworks installed throughout the ADCP.

The partnership was initiated by Jennifer Harvey, Recreational Therapist supporting Behavioural Support Ontario at the Sault Area Hospital. After witnessing the positive impact of the 2024 collaboration in the Transitional Care Unit—where student-designed murals and visual enhancements immediately improved the atmosphere for patients and staff—Harvey continued the partnership to bring the benefits of art to more areas of the hospital. Her vision helped shape the direction of the project, ensuring that the artwork aligned with patient needs and current research in healthcare design.

One of the key findings that influenced the installation was the calming effect of specific colour palettes, particularly greens and blues. In response, several hallways and waiting areas within the cancer program were repainted in soothing tones to complement the artwork. This combination of colour and curated visuals creates a serene, supportive environment intended to ease anxiety and enhance the overall experience for those receiving care.
