ROOTED Exhibit Celebrates 125+ Years of Jewish History in the Sault
Step inside ROOTED: 125+ Years of Jewish History in Sault Ste. Marie, a powerful new exhibition at the Sault Ste. Marie Museum that brings to life a story many in the community have never heard — the deep, lasting impact of Jewish families who helped shape the city for more than a century.
Created in partnership with Congregation Beth Jacob, the exhibit highlights the resilience, entrepreneurship, and cultural contributions of Jewish residents dating back to the early 1900s.
Through photographs, artifacts, written histories, and personal stories, ROOTED traces everything from the first Jewish settlers and their Queen Street businesses to the community’s involvement in charities, service clubs, and even wartime efforts.
The exhibition also marks the 80th anniversary of Beth Jacob Synagogue, a cornerstone of Jewish life in the region. Today, roughly 100–150 Jewish individuals live across the Sault, Algoma District, and Sault, Michigan — a small but vibrant community whose history is woven into the fabric of the city.
Visitors can explore the exhibit from January 14th to 31st, 2026, during regular museum hours.
A special opening event takes place Saturday, January 17th, featuring short speeches, refreshments, and opportunities to meet members of the congregation.
