Simcoe County Museum Virtual Speaker Series

Simcoe County Museum Virtual Speaker Series - Collingwood, from Wooden to Steel Shipbuilding

After building and repairing wooden boats for almost twenty years, Collingwood launched ambitious plans to expand its dry dock and construct steel ships at the beginning of the 20th century. This presentation will explore the transition from wood to steel and the development of a major shipyard that not only had a significant impact on life in Collingwood for more than 80 years, but also on Canada’s involvement in two world wars.

The museum boasts over 30,000 artifacts, five galleries, and 16 heritage buildings on 325 acres of County Forest. Thanks to a generous bequest from Charles Matthews, a new 10,000 square foot expansion will open by 2030, featuring the Charles Matthews Automotive and Innovations Gallery.
