RCMP seize more than $7.5M in contraband tobacco | Rogers tv
Lloydminster RCMP say a routine early-morning traffic stop has led to the largest contraband tobacco seizure in Alberta history. Officers pulled over a semi-truck on 44th Street on Nov.18th after the driver was unable to provide proper documentation for the load. Further inspection revealed approximately 8.8 million unstamped cigarettes, which are illegal under the Excise Act. The driver was arrested at the scene for possesion of contraband tobacco. Police say the seizure is significant for both Lloydminster and the province as a whole, noting illegal tobacco undermines tax revenues and ultimately impacts taxpayers.
