Drivers Face Long Closure as Peoples Road Phase 2 Moves Ahead
Phase 2 of the Peoples Road reconstruction project is now underway in Sault Ste. Marie, and the city is preparing residents for a long but necessary closure.
The stretch between Penno Road and Third Line will remain closed for roughly 30 weeks as crews take on the most complex part of the rebuild.
This phase focuses heavily on underground infrastructure. Crews are opening up the roadway to replace aging storm sewers, sanitary lines, and the watermain, which sit deep below the surface and have reached the end of their service life.
The city says this underground work is the main reason for the extended closure and must be completed before the road can be rebuilt.
Once the pipe replacement is finished later this summer, the project will shift to surface reconstruction. That includes rebuilding the road base, new asphalt, concrete curbs, upgraded lighting, and the installation of new sidewalks and a multi-use trail designed to improve safety and accessibility along the corridor.
