CAPT Petition Calls for Return of 'Bear Train' in the North
The Coalition for Algoma Passenger Trains (CAPT) has launched an official petition calling on federal and provincial governments to help fund the return of the “Bear Train,” a proposed service connecting communities from Sault Ste. Marie north to Hearst. Advocates say the loss of passenger service in 2015 has left many remote communities and tourism operators without reliable access, limiting economic growth across the region. According to CAPT, restoring the rail line could generate between $38 million and $48 million annually, while creating jobs, boosting tourism, and improving transportation for residents, workers, and visitors. The petition is open now, with online signatures closing June 12 and paper petitions continuing throughout the summer.
