Sault Ste. Marie’s Energy Surge: City Council Backs New Power Projects
First Algoma Steel's New Electric Arc Furnace, upcoming transformer station and powerlines are being built to support Algoma’s energy-intensive operations and future industrial growth, This infrastructure will serve the city’s west end and ensure a resilient, high-capacity grid for decades to come.
Solar Farms Worth $470 Million are in development at Leigh’s Bay, Carpin Beach, and near the airport. These projects will generate up to 250 MW of clean power — enough to power the city multiple times over — and are expected to begin construction in 2028.
Batchewana First Nation’s Wind Power Leadership Batchewana First Nation now fully owns the Bow Lake Wind Facility, a 58.3 MW site with 36 turbines north of the city. The facility operates under a 20-year agreement with Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator, and BFN is exploring further wind development as part of the region’s clean energy portfolio.
City Council recently endorsed a $750 Million Dollar Energy Storage Proposal for a clean energy battery storage facility designed to stabilize the grid and support renewable integration. This project will help balance supply and demand, especially as solar and wind capacity grows.
