Social Services Program Helps Local Families Buy Homes

For many local families, buying a home can feel out of reach, even when they have steady employment and the ability to manage a mortgage.

The Affordable Home Ownership Program (AHOP), operated through the District of Sault Ste. Marie Social Services Administration Board and the Sault Ste. Marie Housing Corporation, is working to remove one of the biggest barriers: the down payment.

Through the program, qualifying families can purchase homes at an affordable cost, with the down payment waived. The program focuses on families who have the ability to become homeowners but may not have the savings needed to get started.

Five families have now received homes through AHOP, including Danielle Taylor and her family.

Earlier this year, the program expanded its eligibility to allow more qualifying families across the District to apply, while priority continues to be given to people living in social housing.
