Province Unveils New Transmission Line for Northwest
Ontario announced a major energy investment in Thunder Bay today, unveiling plans for a new 162-kilometre Hydro One transmission line connecting Dryden, Ear Falls, and Red Lake. The province says the project is needed to meet rapidly rising electricity demand in the northwest, including a 525% increase forecast for the Red Lake district.
The line will be built through a 50/50 equity partnership with First Nations, which leaders called a meaningful step toward economic reconciliation.
Ontario estimates the project will support 5,000 direct and indirect jobs and contribute $800 million to the northern economy. Local leaders, including the mayor of Red Lake, say the expanded transmission capacity will help reduce outages, support mining and housing growth, and strengthen the region’s long-term energy reliability.
