Old Sault Ste. Marie Hospital Ready for Development After Sitting Empty Since 2011
After nearly a decade of uncertainty and a 10-month delay in finalizing property deals, the old Sault Area Hospital site is finally seeing movement.
Sault Ste. Marie City Council has confirmed that the long-awaited real estate deals involving the old Sault Area Hospital property were finally closed on October 1st.
The demolition was delayed 10 months due to complex legal and administrative hurdles, including the need to finalize environmental assessments, resolve title issues, and navigate provincial approval processes.
These sites have sat vacant since the hospital relocated to its new Great Northern Road location back in 2010.
Businessman Italo Ferrari purchased the property in 2011 with plans to convert to a long term facilty and condos, but Ferrari faced financial troubles and the plans never came to life. The properties had fallen into disrepair over the years with the city battling Ferrari over safety concerns many times.
GIP Industries has indicated interest in transforming the site into a mixed-use development that could include residential, commercial, and possibly community spaces.
With the sale now poised to close, the next chapter for the former hospital site is about to begin. Residents and city leaders alike will be watching closely to see how this long-dormant space is reimagined for the future.
