Billion Dollar Renewable Energy Investment Coming to Garden River First Nation
Garden River First Nation has announced a landmark renewable energy partnership that will see one of Ontario’s largest solar developments built east of Sault Ste. Marie, in a deal widely described as a billion-dollar project. The utility-scale facility developed in a 50/50 partnership with renewable energy company Neoen will generate about 200 megawatts of power, enough to supply more than 42,000 homes annually, under a 20-year contract awarded by the province’s Independent Electricity System Operator. Construction is expected to begin in 2028 with operations targeted for 2030, and the project is projected to deliver major economic benefits, including tens of millions of dollars in annual revenue and long-term employment opportunities for the community, while advancing Indigenous ownership and leadership in Canada’s clean energy sector.
