Ontario Investing Over $3 Million to Support Sault Hosting 2028 Ontario Winter Games
The Ontario government is investing more than $3 million into sports and recreation in Sault Ste. Marie, helping the city prepare to host the 2028 Ontario Winter Games. The funding includes $1.3 million to support the Games themselves and $2 million through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation to upgrade the John Rhodes Community Centre, a key venue for the event. The 2028 Ontario Winter Games are expected to bring up to 2,800 young athletes from across the province to compete in nearly 20 sports, generating more than $5 million in economic impact for the region. Officials say the investment will boost tourism, create jobs, and leave a lasting legacy for the community. Upgrades to the John Rhodes Centre—including a new roof and HVAC system—will ensure the facility remains a hub for athletes and residents for years to come. City leaders say hosting the Games is a major opportunity to showcase Sault Ste. Marie while inspiring the next generation of athletes.
