Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig & Algoma University Host Red Dress Day to Honour MMIWG
On May 5 Red Dress Day, community members gathered at Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig to honour and remember Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit+ people (MMIW2S+).
A speech led by Nina Toulouse, this event used the powerful symbol of red dresses to represent those who are missing, those who have been lost, and those whose voices must never be forgotten. Through reflection, ceremony, and community presence, Red Dress Day is both an act of remembrance and a call to ongoing awareness, accountability, and action.
This gathering centres Indigenous voices and emphasizes the importance of visibility, collective healing, and justice for MMIW2S+ families and communities.
